About Company
Founded in September 1992, OpTest Equipment Inc. carved out a testing industry niche by developing high-precision optical testing instruments used to ensure the quality of paper, pulp, board, tissue, and nonwovens.
Based in Hawkesbury, Ontario (situated between Ottawa and Montreal), OpTest has grown from a Canadian startup into a global supplier, with its instruments used in more than 35 countries.
Key Milestones and History
Founding (1992)
The company was established with a focus on creating laboratory and on-machine analyzers. From the beginning, our mission was to help mills catch quality issues early in the production process to reduce waste and produce a better sheet. OpTest instruments have been integral in research and development for new materials and manufacturing processes.
The Synergy Award (1998)
A significant point in our history was winning the University-Industry Synergy R&D Partnership Award. This was a collaborative achievement between OpTest, the University of British Columbia (UBC), and Paprican (now FPInnovations), recognizing our success in turning academic research into commercial technology.
Strategic Growth (2000s)
Under the leadership of our president, Roland Trepanier, we have expanded our product line to over 200 instruments. We established our name with "venerable" industry instruments like the Micro Scanner and the Fiber Quality Analyzer (FQA).
Global Distribution
In addition to manufacturing our own patented designs, we became a key North American distributor for Kumagai Riki Kogyo Co. (KRK) and Nomura Shoji Co. of Japan, as well as the PTA Group in Europe allowing us to offer the broadest range of testing solutions.
